DARKWIND
PUPPY INSTRUCTIONS
1. Puppy is fed three times daily and may also have a small
"good night" snack. We
recommend you feed your puppy NUTRO NATURAL CHOICE LAMB AND RICE (Perfornance
Formula) or try any high quality performance food with fat
content at 18% or higher--BC puppies need the fat. We like Eukanuba, Iams, or Pro Plan. In the early morning, 1/4-cup natural yogurt may be added
directly onto the dry dog food. A scrambled egg may be substituted for the
yogurt or mixed with it. Around noon
feed dry food only. At the evening meal
add canned dog food (Nutro), or cooked meat (chicken, turkey, beef), scrambled
egg, tuna and cottage cheese, or mashed hot dogs. Evening snack is a good time for yogurt (2 tablespoons) or warmed
beef consume'. Once a month add tuna
packed in oil (one can divided over three days) to dry food. The oil helps keep
the coat in good condition. Feed puppy
all he or she can eat during the first six months of life. Feed at consistent times, in the same place. DO
NOT LET PUPPY GET OVERWEIGHT OR UNDERWEIGHT.
2. Supplement diet with 500 mg of chewable Vitamin C every day,
500mg in the morning and, if desired the same dosage at night; give one table
of Glucosomine & Chondroitin 500 mg every day. The easiest way is to break in half and put into a bit of hot
dog. Give puppy a fruit flavored Tums
every day, when teething begins. When teething, ears may begin to fall which
indicates a need for increased calcium, so increase Tums to 3 a day for one week only, then return to
the maintenance supplement of one per day, until teething is complete, around 1
year of age.
3. Keep ear fur trimmed very short to help ears lift. Brush and groom daily for short
periods. Indulge in puppy massage when
grooming--it's good for you and the puppy.
The best way to ensure the puppy loves baths is to put him in the tub
with you. Let puppy learn about blow
dryers on the low setting, massaging all the while you dry. Keep puppy clean--that aids in
housetraining.
4. Follow you vet's recommendation for puppy shots--remember to
follow through with the entire program.
Until the inoculation program is complete, DO NOT let puppy have access
to areas where he may be exposed to unvaccinated dogs or their waste. However, remember it is important to keep
the puppy well socialized, so DO make contact with friends and their vaccinated
dogs.
5. Your puppy's AKC litter registration will be applied for by your
breeder, and all puppies bred by Robyn Powley must have the word Darkwind as
the first name in the AKC registered name.
Buyers should submit transfer paperwork to the AKC within one week of
obtaining the paperwork from the breeder. Keep all registration papers with
your other important documents. We
require you have a tattoo and a microchip implanted for positive and permanent
identification purposes by the time the dog is one year old. Please submit the application form for the
BCSA at this time. If you have any
questions regarding the BCSA please call me.
6. We recommend you obtain pet insurance right away. Be safe not sorry, and always err on the
side of caution. Call Robyn at (505)
281-7693 for advice. Please be
respectful of my family's needs and call between 9 am and 5:00 pm New Mexico
time, Monday through Friday. Obviously,
emergencies should be directed to your vet. Remember to provide for you puppy
in your will, and follow all other TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE.
7. Begin puppy training immediately. Follow the instructions in the guides you've been given. Keep training periods short and always end
on a positive note. Always think ahead
and keep your puppy out of a bad situation.
If you are working and leaving the puppy home for long periods of time
you should consider hiring a dog walker to break up the day's loneliness and
help provide some stimulation for the dog.
When you return from a long absence, always GREET THE PUPPY WITH
AFFECTION--no matter what disaster you see.
(DON'T MAKE THE PUPPY DREAD YOUR HOMECOMING.) View each "disaster" as a message from your puppy and
determine a new course of action.
8. DO NOT over exercise a young puppy. DO NOT over stimulate a puppy--remember it is easy to hype up a
Border Collie. DO NOT run or jog with the puppy until he is a year
old. Teach retrieving by rolling
balls--DO NOT let puppy jump up to catch
balls or frisbees--you may be ruining his hips if you do so. DO NOT LET PUPPY UNDER ONE YEAR OF AGE JOG
WITH YOU. As soon as your vet says your puppy is fully inoculated, enroll
in a training class, look for kindergarten playgroups before you engage in
obedience training. NEVER allow your
puppy off leash near roads. DO NOT
allow any herding with cattle or sheep before 1 year of age. DO NOT let the puppy ride on ATV or
other “off road” vehicles without being
tethered. One minor accident can
cause major damage to the puppy’s hips or other joints or injure developing
muscles and bones.
9. LOVE your puppy with all your heart. Make sure he gets the time and attention from you that he
needs. DO NOT keep him isolated or
crated for long periods of time--that leads to destructive behavior.
10. Keep in contact with his breeder. We love hearing about his progress and escapades. We enjoy seeing photographs. We want to help you in anyway we can.
ENJOY YOUR DARKWIND PUPPY!
